As the night wore on I grew more and more tired. I’d had a full day using my abilities and training. Before long, we had to take our first break to get some dinner, stopping at a small-town diner. The locals looked wide-eyed at Zephyr, but seemed to relax when I assured them he was friendly and ordered a massive amount of meat for him.

Of course, he didn’t fit into the diner, so we found a patch of grass not too far from the building to sit and eat. The waitress had eventually grown bold enough to give him a stroke. Zephyr had even tried to talk to her a little.

Although we’d then drawn an audience and it would have been a good PR opportunity to get the humans used to us, I knew we didn’t really have time. Our next stop had been somewhere quieter, and I’d taken a power nap, by far the most exhausted of the two of us.

After some snacks and drinks, we’d then got in the air for a third time. We’d been that way for a couple of hours and I was considering asking Zephyr for one final break when I noticed some more lights ahead. I assumed we were coming up to a small town or village but instead as it slowly came into view, it began looking like some kind of office park or office-based military installation.

It wasn’t entirely quiet either, several cars in the parking lot and lights on in a couple of the buildings. It didn’t take us long to fly over it, however, but it made me wonder where we were.

Only another half an hour or so and I think we’ll be there, Zephyr said into my head. He was starting to sound tired now, but I couldn’t blame him. We’d flown several hundred miles, possibly even a thousand, in one night. I didn’t know where the Sanctuary was exactly, but I was grateful that Zephyr had a good sense of direction.

Despite being tired, I decided to hang on and let Zephyr get us the rest of the way. It was always more effort to land and then get back into the air and up to speed again.

We were still a little way out, but I could see something in the distance that looked like it might be the Sanctuary when I noticed the outline of people up ahead, carrying something that shone.

Is that a group with an orb? I asked Zephyr, knowing his eyesight was better than mine.

It looks like it. I’ll slow so we can sneak up on them.

They might be friendly, I pointed out.

They might. And if they are, we can land and escort them the rest of the way. If not...

We’ll want the element of surprise.

Exactly.

Zephyr slowed, moving his wings more gently to keep us from making as much noise, and came down lower. Thankfully the moon was ahead of us, so our shadow sat somewhere behind. I tried to focus on the people, but it was hard to tell if they were friends or foe.
